Here is what a past participant said about her day with Ronna.
“After a 20 year executive career, I found myself taking the brave step of imagining what my purpose was and how I could serve it through meaningful work. I left my job and started a 6 month sabbatical. I felt both excited and lost, finding myself full of questions that I didn’t have the energy or ability to answer. In the words of Joseph Campbell, I found myself at the start of the Hero’s Journey.
My husband presented me with a day of meditative hiking with Ronna for my birthday – one month into my sabbatical. A Nature prescription for my body and soul. So far, my first month had been filled with lists and errands – all I knew to do in life was to organize my time and complete a schedule of tasks. My day with Ronna transformed me – I found my answers in the Rocky Mountains.
We began with setting my intentions as we walked through the beginning of our day together. Crossing a bridge over a turquoise stream, I could feel my mind and spirit open. As we climbed the path into the trees, Ronna paused to allow me to connect with my senses. I realized it had been years since I paused to be present to my surroundings – hearing the wind blow in the trees, the sunshine on my face, the smell of the pine forest, the contrast of the snow and rocks, the taste of fresh air entering my lungs. I had as long as I needed to pause and connect.
Ronna has a gift in finding the right question – one to walk with and find meaning from. Leaving me with a perfect question, she walked well ahead of me, giving me solitude and space to take my surroundings in and listen to my inner voice. As I climbed the side of the mountain, the trees opened to show the lake below and the valley ahead of us. A forest fire had cleared the way to be able to see for miles. I knew this view had something to tell me. Stopping, I waited until I understood. Ronna patiently waited ahead, watching me from afar, allowing me to find my answers.
I realized I had just created my own forest fire in my life. The complexity of my work and routine had become so heavy – it was like a choked forest. I had chosen to create a ‘controlled burn’ in my life – open the views and allowing a new life to grow.
When I asked Ronna to share her naturalist knowledge about forest fires, it made even more sense. Forest fires allow for a rebirth of the plants and trees. She explained how each species returned at different paces, some to hold the soil together, some to provide structure for more fragile trees to build their strength around…Just like my choice to pause my career, take 6 months to reflect and find my purpose – I had cleared my forest to allow new ideas and ways of being to emerge and thrive.
At the top, we sat with our legs hanging over the edge of the path, sunshine on our faces and a deep sense of calm. In silence, I wrote in my journal while Ronna appreciated the view below.
I remember walking back down the mountain with a spring in my step, feeling like I had left the weight of my burdens at the top of the path. I had put a small burnt pine cone from a Lodgepole pine in my pocket that day to remind me of the beauty of a cleared forest. What I had once seen as destructive, I now see as freeing.
It sits on my desk, reminding me to pay attention to when my life starts to feel choked – knowing I have the courage to clear it and find my purpose when I lose my way. – Valerie McIntyre-Baird, CIO, BP Angola, Leadership Strategist at McBaird Consulting, Calgary, Alberta
