Whether you are highly inuitive or an intellectual everyone needs time to rest the body, mind and the brain. When you do, you come back to a sense of self and you function at higher levels in your personal and professional life.
Best of all, coming back to yourself in a calm way and restoring your mind and body can happen in 15 min if you know what to do. Everyone has 15 minutes. Research shows that time in the forest significantly restores the mind and body and quickly.
The Key to Success in Today’s Busy World
With all of our distractions life is going by faster than ever. There is no downtime anymore, we are on 24-7. Unless you consciously take time to step off this roller coaster you will go round and round and round unable to pause and direct your life where you want it to go. All the while feeling stressed and adgitated. You need to find a way to unplug and restore your body and mind.
Did you know that today our brains are getting so fatigued by all of our screen time we are losing our ability to do critical thinking, good decision making and show empathy. Research shows time in the forest can easily reverse that.
It’s as Easy as Taking a Walk in the Forest
In Japan in the 1980’s Doctors started prescribing a type of forest therapy called Shinrin Yoku or forest bathing which means “taking in the atmosphere of the forest.” They found amazing results but didn’t quite know why so they started conducting research to understand the affects of spending time in the forest. There is now 30 years of research showing spending time in the forest is REALLY REALLY good for you.
- Lower stress levels
- Reduced blood pressure and lower heart rate
- Increased clarity, critical thinking and problem solving capacities
- Hightened decision making abilities
- An overall sense of well being
One study even proved that three days outside in this way can increase your Natural Killer Cell activity (these are your cancer and tumor fighting cells) by 56% and they stay that way for 30 days. Not bad -and no drugs!
Japanese researchers discovered trees give off an organic chemical compound called Phytoncides (it’s like the trees bug spray) and when we bath in these microsopic oils, through our senses, they help increase our Natural Killer Cells and much more.
Did you know:
15 min in nature reduces your cortisol (stress hormone) levels by 12%
2 hours in nature increases your memory and attention span by 20%
3 days in nature increases your cancer fighting blood cells by 56%
A Third Way
Most poeple connect to the forest through an activity like hiking, biking or skiing or they go out with a naturalist who tells them cool stories. Forest Bathing is a third way to experience nature. It’s one that invites you to slow down and sink into your senses. In this way you bath in the atmposhere of the forest.
Go With a Guide
Because this way of being in the forest is so new for many it’s helpful to take a guide and learn from the expert. If you don’t, you risk falling into old habits like walking quickly or analyzing what you are seeing and you will not receive the powerful benefit the forest has to offer you. “This experience provides you with an opportunity to slow down, listen to your ‘other’ voice, reflect, and simply be in nature in a different way. While hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities are wonderful, this is an opportunity to really experience nature, without any other goal or focus.”
